The Edmonton Oilers announced today that they have signed defenseman Ladislav Smid to a two-year contract extension worth $4.5 million. The deal will pay him $2.25 million each season. He would have been a restricted free agent on July 1. In 78 games last season, he had 10 assists and 85 penalty minutes. Not a bad signing for the Oilers, as Smid has good size, plays with plenty of grit, and has good shutdown skills on the blueline. He should continue to be a good fit for the team over the next two years.
