Penguins Sign Forward Fedotenko & Defenseman Guenin to One-Year Deals

The Pittsburgh Penguins retained an important part of their 2009 Stanley Cup winning team on Friday by signing left wing Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year contract worth $1.8 million. The Penguins also announced the signing of defenseman Nate Guenin to a one-year contract. The terms of Guenin’s contract were not disclosed. In 65 games last season for the Penguins, Fedotenko scored 16 goals and 23 assists for 39 points. In 597 career games with the Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Islanders, he has 139 goals and 139 assists for 278 points. He also won a Stanley Cup with the Lightning in 2004. Guenin appeared in only one game last season with the Philadelphia Flyers, scoring no points. In 12 career games with the Flyers, he has two assists. The Fedotenko signing is a good one for the Penguins, as he brings lots of offensive depth and skill to the team. He struggled early last season, but really turned his game around as the season progressed, especially in the playoffs, and became a real effective forward for the Penguins. Guenin is likely just a depth signing for the Penguins and will probably spend most of next season in the minors. He plays real physical and could be an effective sixth or seventh stay-at-home defenseman for the team if recalled from the minors at any point next season.
