The Atlanta Thrashers made a couple of early signings on Thursday by signing right wing Nik Antropov to a four year contract worth $16 million and re-signing right wing Chris Thorburn to a multi-year contract. Antropov’s deal averages out to $4 million per season, while the exact length and financial terms of Thorburn’s contract were not disclosed. Antropov appeared in 81 games last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, scoring 28 goals and 31 assists for 59 points. He was acquired by the Rangers from the Maple Leafs at the 2009 trade deadline in exchange for a second round pick in 2009 and a conditional draft pick. In 527 career games with Toronto and New York Rangers, Antropov has 132 goals and 172 assists for 304 points. In all 82 games last season with the Thrashers, Thorburn scored seven goals and eight assists for 15 points and 104 penalty minutes. In 196 career games with the Thrashers, Buffalo Sabres, and Pittsburgh Penguins, he has 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points and 272 penalty minutes.
These are decent signings for the Thrashers, especially Antropov. He will provide plenty of offensive skill and depth, as well as goal-scoring talent on the rebuilding Thrashers. He is just starting to hit his potential, so he should be a good addition to the team. The Thrashers re-signing Thorburn came as no surprise. He was one of their most physical players last season on the checking lines. His grit will make him an effective shutdown player for the Thrashers next season.
