Bruins Re-Sign Veteran Forward Mark Recchi to One-Year Deal
The Boston Bruins retained the services of right wing Mark Recchi on Thursday by signing him to a one-year contract worth $1 million. The Bruins acquired the veteran forward at last season’s trade deadline from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums. In 80 games last season with the Lightning and Bruins, Recchi scored 23 goals and 38 assists for 61 points. In 1490 career games over 20 seasons with the Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers, and Tampa Bay Lightning, he has 545 goals and 897 assists for 1442 points. His 1442 points currently make him the 14th highest scorer in NHL history. He also won Stanley Cups in 1991 with the Penguins and 2006 with the Hurricanes. This is a good signing for the Bruins, as Recchi brings the team lots of veteran depth and leadership as well as offensive skill. Plus, at $1 million, this is a very salary cap-friendly contract for the Bruins who will be pushing their payroll to the cap ceiling for next season. I have to admit, I thought Recchi’s career was done two seasons ago when he struggled to put up numbers for the Penguins and Thrashers, but he upped his production last season, still making him a very effective forward. Recchi stated just recently that this coming season may be his last, so this will likely be the hockey world’s last chance to see this future hall-of-famer in action.
