Canucks Sign Andrew Alberts to Two-Year Deal

The Vancouver Canucks announced today that they have signed defenseman Andrew Alberts to a two-year contract extension. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. He would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1. In 42 games last season, he had one goal and six assists for seven points and 41 penalty minutes. He missed eight games with a shoulder injury and another 25 games with a broken wrist. Not a bad signing for the Canucks, as Alberts brings plenty of defensive depth to the team. He plays with lots of grit and toughness and has some shutdown skill on the blueline. He should continue to be a good fit as a fifth or sixth defenseman for the Canucks over the next two seasons.

Canucks Acquire Defenseman Alberts from Hurricanes

The Vancouver Canucks announced today that they have acquired defenseman Andrew Alberts from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a third round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft. In 61 games this season with the Hurricanes, Alberts has two goals and eight assists for 10 points and 72 penalty minutes. In 324 career NHL games with the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Carolina Hurricanes, he has four goals and 38 assists for 42 points and 364 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth move for the Canucks, as Alberts is a very physical, defensive defenseman who plays with lots of grit. He should be a good addition to their blueline.

Hurricanes Add Defensemen Alberts & Fitzgerald, Re-Sign Angelidis

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that they have signed defensemen Andrew Alberts to a two-year contract worth $2.1 million and Zach Fitzgerald to a one-year, two-way contract. The team also announced the re-signing left wing Mike Angelidis to a one-year, two-way contract. Alberts’ deal averages out to $1.05 million per season, while financial terms of Fitzgerald’s and Angelidis’ contracts were not disclosed. Alberts was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers last October by the Boston Bruins in exchange for Ned Lukacevic and a conditional 2009 draft pick. In 79 games last season with the Flyers, Alberts scored one goal and 12 assists for 13 points and 61 penalty minutes. In 263 career games, he has two goals and 30 assists for 32 points and 292 penalty minutes. Fitzgerald appeared in 56 games last season for the Manitoba Moose of the AHL, scoring eight assists ad 208 penalty minutes. He played in one NHL game for the Vancouver Canucks in 2007-08, scoring no points. Angelidis played in 67 games last season for the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate in Albany, scoring 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points and 142 penalty minutes. He has yet to appear in an NHL game.

The Alberts signing is not a bad one for the Hurricanes, as he brings plenty of toughness and grit to their defense. He will likely be a sixth of seventh defenseman for the team next season. Fitzgerald and Angelidis are nothing more than depth signings for the team. They will likely spend all of next season in the minors, where they will provide plenty of toughness at their respected positions for Albany of the AHL.

Flyers Acquire Defenseman Alberts from Bruins

The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Monday that they have acquired defenseman Andrew Alberts from the Boston Bruins in exchange for left wing Ned Lukacevic and a conditional draft pick in the 2009 Entry Draft. The draft pick will be a fourth round pick in 2009 unless Alberts resigns with Philadelphia, which will then turn in a third round pick in 2009. Alberts had become expendable to the Bruins after the emergence of defenseman Matt Hunwick. Trading Alberts also trims enough salary from their roster to be able to recall forward Vladimir Sobotka from the minors. Last season with the Bruins, Alberts had two assists in 35 games. He missed 47 games after suffering a concussion. The trade is a good one for the Flyers, as their blueline is currently ravaged with injuries. With Randy Jones and Ryan Parent sidelined with lengthy injuries, the Flyers were in need of depth on defense. Alberts will provide the team with lots of toughness and defensive depth.
