Bill Guerin Announces his Retirement

After 18 seasons in the NHL, veteran right wing Bill Guerin has announced his retirement as a player through the Pittsburgh Penguins' website. Guerin attended the Philadelphia Flyers' training camp this past September on a tryout basis, but was unable to make the team. In 78 games last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he had 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points and 75 penalty minutes. In 1263 career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, San Jose Sharks, New York Islanders, and Pittsburgh Penguins, he has 429 goals and 427 assists for 856 points and 1660 penalty minutes. He won the Stanley Cup in 1995 with the Devils and 2009 with the Penguins, as well as a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Guerin was always a decent offensive contributor throughout his career who played with lots of grit and toughness and was an excellent leader on the ice. He played with lots of class and his contributions on the ice will be missed.

Penguins Re-Sign Veterans Craig Adams & Bill Guerin

The Pittsburgh Penguins locked two important parts of their 2009 Stanley Cup winning team by resigning right wing Craig Adams to a two-year contract worth $1.1 million and right wing Bill Guerin to a one-year contract worth $2 million. Adams' contract averages out to $550,000 per season. The Penguins acquired both players at the 2009 trade deadline. Adams was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks, while Guerin was acquired from the New York Islanders in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2009. In 45 games last season with the Blackhawks and Penguins, Adams scored two goals and five assists for seven points. In 78 games last season with the Islanders and Penguins, Guerin scored 21 goals and 27 assists for 48 points and 81 penalty minutes. These are both excellent signings for the Penguins, as Adams and Guerin played well for the team at the end of last season and into the playoffs, especially in the Stanley Cup Finals. Adams provides the Penguins with lots of physical, two-way play, while Guerin brings lots of veteran leadership, offensive talent, and toughness. These two signings will definitely help Pittsburgh stay near the top of the standings next season. Look for Adams to play more of the two-way hockey he did against the Red Wings in the Finals and look for Guerin to be playing alongside Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin on the Penguins' scoring lines.

Penguins Acquire Guerin from Islanders

Bill Guerin has finally been traded. The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired the veteran right wing on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional draft pick. If the Penguins miss the playoffs, the Islanders receive a fifth round pick. If the Penguins get into the playoffs, the pick becomes a fourth rounder. If they make it to the second round or further, the Islanders will get a third round pick. Guerin has been in the rumor mill for the past couple of weeks and it became apparent he was on the verge of getting traded last weekend when he was pulled from the Islanders' lineup prior to a game against the Buffalo Sabres. In 61 games this season, Guerin has 16 goals and 20 assists for 36 points and 63 penalty minutes. Guerin is a great addition for the Penguins. He can score, he's a very tough and gritty player, he's a proven leader, and he has lots of playoff experience. He will be an integral part of the Penguins' success in the playoffs. Look for his offensive production to increase playing Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. With the addition of Guerin's salary, the Penguins have assigned winger Miroslav Satan to their AHL affiliate after he passed through waivers. This will pretty much end Satan's hugely disappointing stint in Pittsburgh
