Blues Claim Taylor Chorney Off Waivers from Oilers

The St. Louis Blues have announced that they have claimed defenseman Taylor Chorney off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers. He has yet to appear in an NHL game so far this season. In 12 games last season with the Oilers, he had one goal and three assists for four points. He also appeared in 46 games with Oklahoma City of the AHL, scoring three goals and 13 assists for 16 points. Not a bad pickup for the Blues, as Chorney is a very mobile defenseman with good puckmoving skills, as well as plenty of offensive upside. With Carlo Colaiacovo currently on injured reserve with an upper body injury, Chorney should be a suitable replacement on the blueline until Colaiacovo returns to the lineup.

Ducks Acquire Cumiskey from Avalanche for Newton, Draft Pick

The Anaheim Ducks have announced that they have acquired defenseman Kyle Cumiskey from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Jake Newton and a seventh round pick in the 2013 Entry Draft. The pick can become a fifth round pick in 2012 if Cumiskey plays in a minimum of 45 NHL games this season. In 18 games last season with the Avalanche, Cumiskey had one goal and seven assists for eight points. He missed 35 games early in the 2010-11 season with a concussion and the last 28 games of the season with another concussion. In 48 games last season with Syracuse of the AHL, Newton had two goals and seven assists for nine points. He has yet to appear in an NHL game. Not a bad trade for the Ducks, as Cumiskey is a very mobile defenseman and has some offensive upside. He is currently day to day with a groin injury, but with injuries to Toni Lydman and Kurtis Foster, Cumiskey will be a good replacement until the two blueliners return to the lineup. As for the Avalanche, they have plenty of defensive prospects in the minors with offensive upside, so Cumiskey became expendable. Newton will bring some size to Colorado's blueline, something they've been focusing on adding as of late, so he could see a role on the team's defense in the future.

Canadiens Sign Joe Callahan to One-Year Contract

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that they have signed defenseman Joe Callahan to a one-year, two-way contract. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. He was immediately assigned to the Canadiens' AHL affiliate in Hamilton after the signing. In 27 games last season with the Florida Panthers, he had one assist. He also appeared in 48 games with Rochester of the AHL, scoring four goals and nine assists for 13 points. This is really just a depth signing for the Canadiens, as Callahan will likely spend the majority of the 2011-12 season in the minors.

Coyotes Sign Martin Hanzal to Five-Year Extension

The Phoenix Coyotes have announced that they have signed center Martin Hanzal to a five-year contract extension worth $15.5 million. The deal will average out to $3.1 million per season. In two games so far this season, he has one assist. In 61 games last season with the Coyotes, he had 16 goals and 10 assists for 26 points. Not a bad signing for the Coyotes, as Hanzal brings lots of two-way skill to the team at center. He also brings plenty of size, grit, and rugged play to the forward lines. His offensive game is still taking shape, so look for it to improve over the course of the contract.

Jets Claim Brett MacLean Off Waivers from Coyotes

The Winnipeg Jets have announced that they have claimed right wing Brett MacLean off waivers from the Phoenix Coyotes. He is pointless in only one game so far this season with the Jets. In 13 games last season with the Coyotes, he had two goals and one assist for three points. He also appeared in 51 games with San Antonio of the AHL, scoring 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points. Not a bad pickup for the Jets, as MacLean has plenty of potential to become a scoring winger at the NHL level. He has plenty of two-way and scoring upside and is versatile enough to play at center. Look for him to stick with the Jets throughout the season.

NY Rangers Claim Jeff Woywitka Off Waivers from Canadiens

The New York Rangers have announced that they have claimed defenseman Jeff Woywitka off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens. In 63 games last season with the Dallas Stars, he had two goals and nine assists for 11 points. He has yet to play a game with the Rangers this season. This is purely a depth move for the Rangers, as Marc Staal is currently sidelined with post concussion headaches. Woywitka will bring plenty of size and strength to the blueline as either a sixth or seventh defenseman until Staal returns to the lineup.

Coyotes Sign Paul Bissonnette to Two-Year Extension

The Phoenix Coyotes announced on Wednesday that they have signed left wing Paul Bissonnette to a two-year contract extension worth $1.475 million. He would have been an unrestricted free agent next summer. In 48 games last season with the Coyotes, he had one goal and 71 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth signing for the Coyotes, as Bissonnette is a hard-working player on the ice who plays with lots of grit and toughness. Look for him to continue to fill the enforcer role over the next few seasons.

Canadiens Claim Blair Betts Off Waivers from Flyers

The Montreal Canadiens announced on Wednesday that they have claimed center Blair Betts off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers. In 75 games last season with the Flyers, he had five goals and seven assists for 12 points. Not a bad depth move for the Canadiens, as Betts will bring lots of skill on the faceoff, as well has experience to the penalty kill and some two-way ability to the forward lines. Look for him to center the fourth line throughout the 2011-12 season.

Devils Sign Petr Sykora to One-Year Contract

The New Jersey Devils announced on Wednesday that they have signed right wing Petr Sykora to a one-year contract worth $650,000. He had been attending the team's training camp on a tryout basis. This will be his second stint with the team, where he played from 1995 to 2002. In 13 games last season with Plzen of the Czech League, he had five goals and eight assists for 13 points. He also appeared in 28 games with Dynamo Minsk of the KHL, scoring eight goals and eight assists for 16 points. He last played in the NHL with the Minnesota Wild during the 2009-10 season. Not a bad depth signing for the Devils, as Sykora brings plenty of offensive skill to the forward lines and a good shot. There's a possibility he could play on the top line with Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias, but it remains to be seen just how Devils' head coach Peter DeBoer will set up his lines when the regular season starts.

Maple Leafs Acquire David Steckel from Devils

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they have acquired center David Steckel from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft. He still has two years left on his current contract. In 75 games last season with the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils, he had six goals and six assists for 12 points. Not a bad depth move for the Maple Leafs, as Steckel will bring loads of experience and talent to the faceoff, as well as plenty of size and skill to the penalty kill. With Tim Connolly and Mikhail Grabovski currently sidelined with injuries, Steckel adds some much needed depth at center for Toronto, but it's just a short-term fix, as both players shouldn't miss much time. Once they return, look for Steckel to play on the fourth line. For the Devils, this move presents an opportunity for players like Brad Mills, Adam Henrique, Mattias Tedenby, and Cam Janssen to make the opening night roster.

Canucks Claim Dale Weise Off Waivers from NY Rangers

The Vancouver Canucks have announced that they have claimed right wing Dale Weise off waivers from the New York Rangers. In 10 games last season with the Rangers, he had no points and 19 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 47 games with Connecticut of the AHL, scoring 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points and 73 penalty minutes. This is really just a depth move for the Canucks, as Weise will likely spend the majority of the season in the minors. If he does see any time with Vancouver, it will likely be on the fourth line, where he will provide plenty of grit and toughness.

NY Islanders Sign Jay Pandolfo to One-Year Contract

The New York Islanders have announced that they have signed left wing Jay Pandolfo to a one-year contract. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is believed to be for the veteran minimum of $570,000. He had been attending the team's training camp on a tryout basis. In 12 games last season with Springfield of the AHL, Pandolfo had two goals and four assists for six points. He last played in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils during the 2009-10 season. Not a bad depth signing for the Islanders, as Pandolfo will bring a lot of experience and skill to the penalty kill and is a solid forechecker. He's never had a lot of scoring upside, so look for him to play on the checking lines during the upcoming season.

Sharks Sign Brad Winchester to One-Year Deal

The San Jose Sharks announced today that they have signed left wing Brad Winchester to a one-year contract. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. He had been attending the team's training camp on a tryout basis. In 76 games last season with the St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks, he had 10 goals and six assists for 16 points and 114 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth signing for the Sharks, as Winchester will bring lots of grit and toughness to the lineup, as well as plenty of size. He should be a good fit on the checking lines.

Blackhawks Sign Ray Emery to One-Year Contract

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have signed goaltender Ray Emery to a one-year contract worth $600,000. He had been attending the team's training camp on a tryout basis. In 10 games last season with the Anaheim Ducks, Emery posted a 7-2-0 record, with a 2.28 GAA and a .926 save percentage. He missed the majority of the 2010-11 season with a career-threatening hip injury, but was able to battle back from the condition and sign with the Ducks. Not a bad depth signing for the Blackhawks, as Emery has good size, is a solid goaltender, and will bring the team plenty of veteran depth in goal. Despite struggling a bit in the preseason and being outplayed by Alexander Salak, he was able to earn a contract with Chicago and will likely play as the backup to Corey Crawford. If Emery should struggle this season, he will more than likely be sent to the minors and be replaced with Salak.

Red Wings Sign Fabian Brunnstrom to One-Year Contract

The Detroit Red Wings announced today that they have signed right wing Fabian Brunnstrom to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay him $600,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level. He had been attending the team's training camp on a tryout basis. In 72 games last season with Texas and Toronto of the AHL, he had 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points. He last played in the NHL with the Dallas Stars during the 2009-10 season. This isn't a bad depth signing for the Red Wings, as Brunnstrom still has the potential to become a scoring forward in the NHL despite being very inconsistent and having trouble adapting to the North American brand of hockey. For the past several seasons, the Red Wings have been able to help struggling players improve their game, so the team might be able to help Brunnstrom turn his career around. This will likely be his last chance to prove himself at the NHL level, and if he can't find any consistency to his game, Brunnstrom will likely be headed back to Europe next summer.

FREE AGENT CLASSIFICATIONS (Courtesy of nhl.com)

Group 2 (Restricted Free Agents) - Subject to compensation and right to match. The following players have been tendered a qualifying offer by their respective clubs and are subject to draft-choice compensation and right to match. The draft choice compensation scale is based on compensation offered by the new club (These are last summer's figures and are meant as a general guideline for compensation. If new figures are released, they will likely be released on July 1, 2011):

$1,034,249 or below - No compensation
Over $1,034,249 to $1,567,043 - Third-round choice
Over $1,567,043 to $3,134,088 - Second-round choice
Over $3,134,088 to $4,701,131 - First-round and Third-round choice
Over $4,701,131 to $6,268,175 - First-Round, Second-round, and Third-round choice
Over $6,268,175 to $7,835,219 - two First-round choices, one second-round choice, and one Third-round choice
Over $7,835,219 - four First-round choices

Group 3 (Unrestricted Free Agents) - The following players have qualified for Group 3 Free Agency (age 27 or older or with at least seven accrued seasons) and are Unrestricted Free Agents.

Group 6 (Unrestricted Free Agents) - The following players qualify for unrestricted free agency, having met the requirements for Group 6 free agency. These players, whose contracts have expired, are age 25 or older, have completed three or more professional seasons, and (i) in the case of a player other than a goaltender, have played less than 80 NHL games (regular season and playoffs), or (ii) in the case of a goaltender, have played less than 28 NHL games (regular season and playoffs).

Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) - The following players were not tendered a qualifying offer and are therefore unrestricted free agents not subject to a right to match or draft choice compensation.
