Maple Leafs Sign Mike Brown to Three-Year Extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have signed right wing Mike Brown to a three-year contract extension worth $2.215 million. The deal will pay him $760,000 in 2011-12 and $725,000 in both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. He would have been a restricted free agent this summer. In 27 games so far this season, he has two goals and three assists for five points and 41 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth signing for the Maple Leafs, as Brown is a very physical player who is not afraid to drop the gloves to protect his teammates. He also has some speed and can kill penalties, making him an effective checking line forward for the team.

Maple Leafs Acquire Mike Brown from Ducks

The Toronto Maple Leafs added some toughness to their lineup on Saturday by acquiring right wing Mike Brown from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for their fifth round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft. In 75 games last season with the Ducks, Brown had six goals and one assist for seven points and 106 penalty minutes. In 142 career NHL games with the Ducks and Vancouver Canucks, he has nine goals and three assists for 12 points and 306 penalty minutes. Not a bad acquisition for the Maple Leafs, as Brown will be an energy player for the team and probably be used on the penalty kill. He is a very tough forward who will stick up for his teammates, so he should be a good fit for the Maple Leafs.

Ducks Re-Sign Right Wing Brown to Two-Year Contract

The Anaheim Ducks have announced that they have re-signed right wing Mike Brown to a two-year contract extension. Terms of the deal were not released. He would have been a restricted free agent on July 1. The Ducks acquired Brown from the Vancouver Canucks in February in exchange for defenseman Nathan McIver. In 48 games last season with the Canucks and Ducks, Brown scored two goals and two assists for four points and 145 penalty minutes. In 67 career NHL games, he has three goals and two assists for five points and 200 penalty minutes. This is a good signing for the Ducks, as Brown is a very physical forward who can wear down the opposition. Coupled with George Parros, the two forwards should provide the Ducks with a decent shutdown line next season.

Canucks Acquire McIver from Ducks

The Vancouver Canucks announced on Wednesday that they have acquired defenseman Nathan McIver from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for right wing Mike Brown. This is the second trade for the Ducks in the last two days, having acquired defenseman Sheldon Brookbank from the Devils late Tuesday night. In 18 games so far this season, McIver has one assists and 36 penalty minutes. McIver, who was claimed off waivers by the Ducks this past October, will be assigned to the Canucks AHL affiliate in Manitoba. Brown, who has played in 20 games so far this season, has one assist and 85 penalty minutes. This is kind of a puzzling trade for the Ducks to make, as McIver has way more potential than recent acquisition Sheldon Brookbank. Brown gives the Ducks more toughness on offense and gain a third enforcer back to the team since trading Brad May to Toronto. With George Parros and Travis Moen already holding enforcer roles with the team, it make little sense for the Ducks to acquire a third enforcer when they need to boost their offense with a scoring forward. However, Moen is an unrestricted free agent this summer, and by acquiring Brown, the Ducks' management may be showing that they have no intention of resigning Moen. As for McIver, he brings plenty of defensive potential and toughness to the Canucks blueline. He could get a chance at a roster spot next season if the Canucks fail to resign Mattias Ohlund or Rob Davison this summer, as both are unrestricted free agents in July.
