Mark Recchi Announces His Retirement
Just moments after the Boston Bruins won their first Stanley Cup since 1972, Bruins' right wing Mark Recchi announced his retirement from hockey. In 81 games this past season, he had 14 goals and 34 assists for 48 points. He also had five goals and nine assists for 14 points in 25 playoff games. He would have been an eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1. In 1652 career NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Boston Bruins, Recchi has 577 goals and 956 assists for 1533 points and 1033 penalty minutes. He won the Stanley Cup in 1991 with the Penguins and 2006 with the Hurricanes in addition to winning with the Bruins. This comes as no surprise, as Recchi hinted that if the Bruins won the Stanley Cup, he would retire from hockey. He always had great goal-scoring skill and was an excellent playmaker on the ice. He was also a proven leader and played with lots of energy. It's great to see Recchi go out on top as a winner and he will definitely be in the Hockey Hall of Fame one day. I wish him all the best in retirement.

Bruins Reach One-Year Agreement with Mark Recchi
The Boston Bruins announced today that they have reached an agreement with right wing Mark Recchi on a one-year contract for the 2010-11 season. The deal is expected to be for $1 million, but it will have some significant bonuses attached depending on the number of games he plays. The team is expected to make the announcement on Monday. He would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1. In 81 games last season with the Bruins, Recchi had 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points. In 1571 career NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Boston Bruins, he has 563 goals and 922 assists for 1485 points. He won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 1991 and Carolina in 2006. This is a pretty good move for the Bruins, as Recchi is still a quality forward despite his age. He brings plenty of veteran, offensive depth, is still good on the power play, and has lots of leadership skills. Recchi will be a good mentor next season for the young players in Boston.

Bruins Re-Sign Veteran Forward Mark Recchi to One-Year Deal
The Boston Bruins retained the services of right wing Mark Recchi on Thursday by signing him to a one-year contract worth $1 million. The Bruins acquired the veteran forward at last season’s trade deadline from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums. In 80 games last season with the Lightning and Bruins, Recchi scored 23 goals and 38 assists for 61 points. In 1490 career games over 20 seasons with the Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers, and Tampa Bay Lightning, he has 545 goals and 897 assists for 1442 points. His 1442 points currently make him the 14th highest scorer in NHL history. He also won Stanley Cups in 1991 with the Penguins and 2006 with the Hurricanes. This is a good signing for the Bruins, as Recchi brings the team lots of veteran depth and leadership as well as offensive skill. Plus, at $1 million, this is a very salary cap-friendly contract for the Bruins who will be pushing their payroll to the cap ceiling for next season. I have to admit, I thought Recchi’s career was done two seasons ago when he struggled to put up numbers for the Penguins and Thrashers, but he upped his production last season, still making him a very effective forward. Recchi stated just recently that this coming season may be his last, so this will likely be the hockey world’s last chance to see this future hall-of-famer in action.

Bruins Acquire Veteran Forward Recchi from Lightning
The Boston Bruins added some veteran depth to their lineup on Wednesday by acquiring right wing Mark Recchi and a second round draft pick in 2010 from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defenseman Matt Lashoff and right wing Martins Karsums. Rumors began to swirl in the last week that Recchi could be on the move by the deadline, while the Bruins had been seeking a depth winger for a playoff run. In 62 games this season, Recchi has 13 goals and 32 assists for 45 points and recently passed Bryan Trottier for 14th all-time on the NHL scoring list. Lashoff has one assist in 16 games, while Karsums has one assist in six games. Recchi adds lots of veteran depth, offensive experience, and Stanley Cup experience to the Bruins. Lashoff gives the Lightning a tough, offensive blueliner to their rebuilding defense, while Karsums gives them a winger with plenty of offensive promise.
