Doug Weight Announces His Retirement

After 19 seasons in the NHL, NY Islanders center and captain Doug Weight has decided to retire. He will stay on with the team as an assistant coach and a special assistant to general manager Garth Snow. He would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer. In 18 games this past season with the Islanders, he had two goals and seven assists for nine points. He missed the last 64 games of the regular season with back spasms. In 1238 career NHL games with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, and New York Islanders, he has 278 goals and 755 assists for 1033 points. He won the Stanley Cup in 2006 as a member of the Hurricanes and an Olympic Silver Medal in 2002 as a member of Team USA. Weight was always a solid forward throughout his career who saw the ice very well. He was an excellent passer and a proven leader on and off the ice. I wish him all the best in retirement.

Islanders Sign Forward Weight to One-Year Contract

According to tsn.ca, veteran center Doug Weight has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the New York Islanders. Financial terms of the deal have not been released, but it's believed the only thing holding up the official announcement of the signing is the bonus structure of the contract. In 36 games last season with the Islanders, Weight had one goal and 16 assists for 17 points. He missed much of the season with a torn labrum and a rotator cuff injury. In 1220 career NHL games with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, and New York Islanders, he has 276 goals and 748 assists for 1024 points. He won the Stanley Cup in 2006 as a member of the Hurricanes. Not a bad signing for the Islanders, as Weight brings lots of offensive depth and leadership to the team. Even though his offensive numbers have gone down in recent years, Weight still brings lots of experience to the rebuilding team and serve as a mentor to the younger players.

Islanders Sign Weight to One-Year Extension

The New York Islanders have announced that they have signed center Doug Weight to a one-year contract extension worth $2 million. The 38-year-old forward has played in 51 games this season, scoring nine goals and 27 assists for 36 points with the Islanders. He signed as a free agent with the team last summer. Weight has battled injuries all season, recently missing 19 games due to an MCL sprain, while missing seven games in January with a leg injury and three games in December with a groin injury. In 1182 career games, he has 274 goals and 731 assists for 1005 points with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, and New York Islanders. He won his first Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006. This is a good signing for the Islanders, as Weight was one of the few bright spots on a team that struggled all season. He brings lots of veteran experience and leadership, as well as offensive depth, to the young Islanders team. Weight could be a good mentor for some of the younger players on the Islanders next season, such as Kyle Okposo and Josh Bailey.
