Predators Sign Steve Begin to One-Year Deal
The Nashville Predators announced today that they have signed left wing Steve Begin to a one-year, two-way contract worth $550,000. Begin will be assigned to the Predators' AHL affiliate in Milwaukee on a conditioning stint before he will join the team. In 77 games last season with the Boston Bruins, he had five goals and nine assists for 14 points and 53 penalty minutes. In 486 career NHL games with the Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, and Boston Bruins, he has 52 goals and 48 assists for 100 points and 535 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth signing for the Predators, as Begin will add some extra toughness to the team. Besides playing with plenty of toughness, Begin is also a good hitter, has some defensive ability, and can also play at center, so he should be a solid addition to the team.

Bruins Sign Center Begin to One-Year Contract
The Boston Bruins added some depth to their lineup on Wednesday by signing center Steve Begin to a one-year contract worth $850,000. Begin split last season with the Montreal Canadiens and Dallas Stars after the Stars acquired him in February for defenseman Doug Janik. In 62 games last season with the Canadiens and Stars, Begin scored seven goals and five assists for 12 points. In 409 career games over 10 seasons with the Canadiens, Stars, and Calgary Flames, he has 47 goals and 39 assists for 86 points and 482 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth signing for the Bruins, as Begin brings plenty of toughness and veteran depth to their checking lines. This signing, though, means that Stephane Yelle likely won’t be back with the Bruins next season as both he and Begin play similar styles of hockey.

Stars Acquire Begin from Canadiens
The Dallas Stars announced on Thursday that they have acquired center Steve Begin from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman Doug Janik. Begin, who had been a healthy scratch in the Canadiens last five games, requested a trade and was promptly accommodated. In 42 games so far this season, Begin has six goals and four assists for 10 points. Janik has played in 13 games so far this season, scoring one assist. The Stars get a decent, gritty forward out of Begin who will make an excellent addition to their penalty kill. With injuries to Toby Petersen, Brad Richards, and Brendan Morrow, Begin's veteran experience will also help the Stars as they continue to hold onto a playoff spot. Janik gives the Canadiens plenty of toughness and depth on their blueline. He will likely be a sixth or seventh defenseman for the Canadiens as they fight to hold onto a playoff spot.
