Canucks Sign Sedin Twins to Five-Year Contracts

Two of the biggest names on the free agent market were removed shortly before free agency began at 12 noon on Wednesday when the Vancouver Canucks signed forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin to five-year contract extensions. The deals are worth $30.5 million, which average out to $6.1 million per season. The Sedins were in the rumor mill a lot over the past few weeks as it began to look as if they were not going to re-sign with the Canucks. They were both seeking long-term, expensive contracts that led many to speculate the Canucks would not be able to afford to re-sign them. Both players have played their entire careers in Vancouver alongside each other. In all 82 games last season, Daniel scored 31 goals and 51 assist for 82 points. Henrik appeared in all 82 games last season as well, scoring 22 goals and 60 assists for 82 points. In eight seasons with the Canucks, Daniel has appeared in 642 games, scoring 179 goals and 283 assists for 462 points, while Henrik has appeared in 646 games, scoring 109 goals and 351 assists for 460 points. I think I just heard a huge sigh of relief blow out of British Columbia. This is a huge signing for the Canucks, as they would have been hard pressed to find two highly talented forwards to replace the Sedins if they had signed elsewhere. They are both extremely talented forwards with lots of offensive skill, especially on the power play. Daniel has great goal-scoring abilities, while Henrik is an excellent passer and stick-handler. This is without a doubt one of the most important signings the Canucks have made in recent years and the Sedin twins will help keep the team competitive for years to come.
