Flames Sign Tim Jackman to Two-Year Extension

While the Calgary Flames didn't make any trades on Trade Deadline Day, they did announce that they re-signed right wing Tim Jackman to a two-year contract extension worth $1.225 million. The deal will average out to $612,500 per season. He would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer. In 62 games so far this season, he has one goal and six assists for seven points and 77 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth signing for the Flames, as Jackman brings a lot of toughness to the lineup. He has good size, loves to initiate contact, and plays a rugged game. Look for him to continue to play a checking line role over the next two seasons.

Flames Re-Sign Derek Smith to Two-Year Contract

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have re-signed defenseman Derek Smith to a two-year contract worth $1.55 million. The deal will average out to $775,000 per season. The 27-year-old blueliner, who has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain since the end of December, would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer. In 32 games so far this season, he has two goals and eight assists for 10 points. Not a bad depth signing for the Flames, as Smith was having a fine season with the team before sustaining the ankle sprain. He has some offensive ability and could likely play a fifth or sixth defensive role with Calgary over the next two seasons.

Flames Sign Krys Kolanos to Two-Year Deal

The Calgary Flames announced on Wednesday that they have signed center Krys Kolanos to a two-year, two-way contract and recalled him from their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. In 34 games with Abbotsford, he has 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points. He last appeared in the NHL during the 2008-09 season with the Minnesota Wild, scoring three goals and three assists for six points in 21 games. Kolanos has had an excellent season thus far with Abbotsford and the Flames have rewarded him with an NHL contract for his fine play. Kolanos has always been an excellent player at the AHL level, but has never been able to bring that success to the NHL. At best, he will likely play a role on Calgary's fourth line. Here's hoping he will bring some of his recent scoring touch from the AHL to the NHL.

Flames Acquire Akim Aliu from Jets for John Negrin

The Calgary Flames announced on Monday that they have acquired right wing Akim Aliu from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for defenseman John Negrin. In 13 games this season with Abbotsford of the AHL, Aliu has four goals and one assist for five points. He also appeared in 10 games with Colorado of the ECHL, scoring two goals and four assists for six points. Negrin has one assist in 26 games with Abbotsford. He has also appeared in nine games with Utah of the ECHL, scoring one goal and five assists for six points. Both players have yet to appear in an NHL game and will be eligible for restricted free agency this summer. In Aliu, the Flames add a talented forward with plenty of size and some offensive upside despite struggling offensively in the minors. For now, he will bolster Calgary's minor league affiliate in Abbotsford. In Negrin, the Jets get a defenseman with plenty of size and a little offensive ability. He has battled some knee injuries throughout his hockey career, but should be a steady blueliner for the team's AHL affiliate in St. John's.

Blackhawks Acquire Brendan Morrison from Flames

The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that they have acquired center Brendan Morrison from the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenseman Brian Connelly. In 28 games this season with the Flames, Morrison has four goals and seven assists for 11 points. Connelly has five goals and 31 assists for 36 points in 44 games with Rockford of the AHL. He has yet to appear in an NHL game. Not a bad move for the Blackhawks, as Morrison will bring plenty of depth up the middle for the team. He also adds some playmaking and faceoff skills to the forward lines. As for the Flames, they land a defensive asset in Connelly, but he is a long shot to make the team at this time. For now, he will provide plenty of offensive skill to the blueline of their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford.

Flames Acquire Cammalleri, Ramo from Canadiens for Bourque, Holland

The Calgary Flames swung a major deal on Thursday by acquiring left wing Mike Cammalleri, goaltender Karri Ramo, and a fifth round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for left wing Rene Bourque, right wing Patrick Holland, and a second round pick in the 2013 Entry Draft. The trade came just one day after Cammalleri made disparaging remarks on the Canadiens' play as of late. The tam currently sits at the bottom of the Northeast Division with a 16-20-7 record in 43 games and have 39 points. They are 3-7-0 in their last 10 games and have lost two straight games. In 38 games this season with Montreal, Cammalleri has nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points. In 35 games with Avangard Omsk of the KHL, Ramo has a 13-15-7 record, five shutouts, a 1.97 GAA, and a .927 save percentage. Bourque has 13 goals and three assists for 16 points in 38 games with the Flames. He is currently serving a five game suspension for elbowing Washington's Nicklas Backstrom in the head on January 5. In 40 games with the Tri-City Americans of the WHL, Holland has 17 goals and 40 assists for 57 points.

This is an excellent trade for the Flames, as Cammalleri adds plenty of offensive and scoring depth to the team despite struggling in Montreal this season. He enjoyed a productive 2008-09 season in Calgary playing alongside Jarome Iginla, so the two wingers will likely play on the same line once again and hopefully find the offensive spark they once had together. Ramo was drafted by GM Jay Feaster while he was with the Tampa Bay Lightning, so he adds some familiarity in net. However, there is no guarantee that Ramo will play for the Flames in the near future, as he has been playing in the KHL in recent years. Despite struggling for much of the 2011-12 season, this move clearly shows that the Flames are definitely going to make a push for the playoffs. As for the Canadiens, they dealt a player who had clearly lost his passion for the team and also cleared up some salary cap space in the process. In Bourque, they get a big winger who can score and play a physical game despite being a bit of a streaky scorer. He is also excellent on the power play and penalty kill, so they get a well-rounded special teams player in the deal. Holland has shown some promise in the WHL over the past few seasons, so the Canadiens get a prospect with some upside. In the end, the trade is a shakeup for both struggling teams. Cammalleri and Bourque will also look for fresh starts with their new teams and hopefully improve their offensive games.

Flames Acquire Blair Jones from Lightning for Brendan Mikkelson

The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired center Blair Jones from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defenseman Brendan Mikkelson. In 22 games this season with the Lightning, Jones has two goals and two assists for four points. He also appeared in five games with Norfolk of the AHL, scoring two goals and two assists for four points. In 33 games this season with Abbotsford of the AHL, Mikkelson has three goals and 12 assists for 15 points. He has not appeared in an NHL game so far this season. This is really just a depth move for both teams. Jones will give the Flames some depth on their checking lines, while Mikkelson gives the Lightning organization some depth on defense. More than likely, he will play on the third defensive pairing if he sees any NHL action this season.

Flames Claim Blake Comeau Off Waivers from NY Islanders

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have claimed left wing Blake Comeau off waivers from the New York Islanders. In 16 games with the Islanders, he had no points and a -11 rating. In 77 games last season, he had 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points. Not a bad pick-up for the Flames, as Comeau brings some offensive and goal scoring depth to the team despite being inconsistent in his scoring from time to time. He struggled mightily with the Islanders this season, so perhaps the change of scenery can help Comeau turn his game around.

Ducks Claim Niklas Hagman Off Waivers from Flames

The Anaheim Ducks have announced that they have claimed left wing Niklas Hagman off re-entry waivers from the Calgary Flames. Both teams will split the remainder of his $3 million contract this season. In eight games with the Flames this season, he has one goal and three assists for four points. Not a bad move for the Ducks, as Hagman will bring some offensive depth and scoring ability to the wing despite being a bit inconsistent in his scoring. He could end up playing on the Ducks' second line if they decide to give him a fresh start.

Coyotes Acquire Daymond Langkow from Flames

The Calgary Flames announced today that they have traded center Daymond Langkow to the Phoenix Coyotes pending a physical. It is not known at this time what the Flames will receive in return. It will be his second stint with the Coyotes, where he played from 2001 to 2004. Langkow has one more year left on his current contract at $4.5 million. In four games last season with the Flames, he had one assist. He missed 78 games due to a fractured vertebra and was a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance and dedication to hockey this past season. In 1017 career NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, and Calgary Flames, he has 259 goals and 383 assists for 642 points. For the Flames, this is really just a salary dumping move and will give them some salary cap space to help make trades throughout the upcoming season if needed. For the Coyotes, Langkow will bring some two-way skill and veteran depth to the club up the middle.

The Calgary Flames will receive right wing Lee Stempniak in return if Langkow passes his physical. In all 82 games last season with the Coyotes, Stempniak had 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points. He has one more year left on his current contract that will pay him $2.3 million. Stempniak will bring some offensive skill to the forward lines, especially on the power play, as well as some speed. Despite being a little inconsistent in his scoring, he should be a solid second or third line option for the Flames.

Flames Sign Scott Hannan to One-Year Contract

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have signed defenseman Scott Hannan to a one-year contract worth $1 million. In 78 games last season with the Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals, he had one goal and 10 assists for 11 points. Not a bad signing for the Flames, as Hannan will bring plenty of defensive depth to the blueline as well as some shutdown skills as well. He should be a good addition to Calgary's defense.

Flames Re-Sign Leland Irving to One-Year Contract

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have re-signed goaltender Leland Irving to a one-year, two-way contract worth $600,000. In 61 games last season with Abbotsford of the AHL, he posted a 30-24-2 record, eight shutouts, a 2.30 GAA, and a .913 save percentage. He has yet to appear in an NHL game. Not a bad depth signing for the Flames, as Irving made good strides in his development last season in the AHL. He will likely start the 2011-12 season in the minors since backup goaltender Henrik Karlsson is on a two-year, one-way contract. By playing in the minors, it will give him more time to further develop his goaltending skills, as he likely wouldn't see much NHL action serving as a backup to Miikka Kiprusoff. If Irving sees any time in the NHL next season, it will likely be as an injury replacement.

Flames Re-Sign Anton Babchuk, Add Guillaume Desbiens

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have re-signed defenseman Anton Babchuk to a two-year contract worth $5 million and signed right wing Guillaume Desbiens to a one-year, two-way contract worth $525,000 at the NHL level. Babchuk's deal will pay him $2.5 million per season. In 65 games last season with the Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames, Babchuk had 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points. Desbiens appeared in 10 games last season with the Vancouver Canucks, scoring no points. He also played in 53 games with Manitoba of the AHL, scoring 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points and 104 penalty minutes. Babchuk isn't a bad signing for the Flames, as he brings plenty of offensive skill and a good shot to the blueline. More than likely, he will continue to play a top-four defensive role for the team over the next two seasons. As for Desbiens, he will likely play most of next season in the minors, providing Calgary's AHL affiliate in Abbotsford with lots of toughness and physical play on the forward lines.

Flames Sign Ben Walter and Clay Wilson

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have signed center Ben Walter and defenseman Clay Wilson to two-year contracts worth $1.075 million and $1.05 million, respectively. Walter's deal will average $537,500 per season, while Wilson's contract will average $525,000 per year. In 77 games last season with Lake Erie of the AHL, Walter had 23 goals and 47 assists for 70 points. Wilson appeared in 15 games with the Florida Panthers last season, scoring three goals and two assists for five points. He also played in 66 games with Rochester of the AHL, scoring 12 goals and 36 assists for 48 points. These are really just depth signings for the Flames. Walter brings some defensive skill to the forward lines, but doesn't have a lot of scoring upside at the NHL level. He will likely spend the majority of next season in the minors. Wilson brings some depth to the blueline, but will likely have to fight for a roster spot at training camp. If he does see an time with Calgary in 2011-12, it will likely be as a sixth or seventh defenseman.

Flames Sign Joe Piskula to One-Year Contract

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have signed defenseman Joe Piskula to a two-year contract worth $2.05 million. The deal will average out to $1.025 million per season. In 71 games last season with Abbotsford of the AHL, he had one goal and 11 assists for 12 points and 73 penalty minutes. He last played in the NHL during the 2006-07 season with the Los Angeles Kings. This is really just a depth signing for the Flames, as Piskula will likely spend all of next season in the minors.

Flames Sign Chris Butler to Two-Year Deal

The Calgary Flames have announced that they have signed defenseman Chris Butler to a two-year contract worth $2.5 million. The deal will pay him $1.25 million per season. He was acquired by the Flames on June 25 from the Buffalo Sabres along with Paul Byron in exchange for Robyn Regehr, Ales Kotalik, and Calgary's second round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft. In 49 games last season with the Sabres, Butler had two goals and seven assists for nine points. Not a bad signing for the Flames, as Butler will bring plenty of puck-moving skill and depth to their blueline. With a bigger role in Calgary, look for him to improve his game over the next two seasons.

Flames Sign Alex Tanguay to Five-Year Extension

The Calgary Flames announced on Saturday that they have signed left wing Alex Tanguay to a five-year contract extension worth $17.5 million. The deal will pay him $3.5 million per season. He would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1. In 79 games last season, he had 22 goals and 47 assists for 69 points. It's not a bad signing for the Flames, although they probably would have been better off signing Tanguay for no more than three years to avoid a long-term contract. However, he will continue to bring plenty of offensive depth and great passing skills to the team.

Sabres Acquire Regehr, Kotalik from Flames for Butler, Byron

The Buffalo Sabres announced on Saturday that they have acquired defenseman Robyn Regehr, right wing Ales Kotalik, and Calgary's second round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft in exchange for defenseman Chris Butler and center Paul Byron. The Flames had asked Regehr on Thursday to waive his no-movement clause to facilitate a trade to the Sabres and the deal was completed two days later. In 79 games last season with the Flames, Regehr had two goals and 15 assists for 17 points. Kotalik appeared in 26 games last season with Calgary, scoring four goals and two assists for six points. He also played in 25 games with Abbotsford of the AHL, scoring six goals and 16 assists for 22 points. In 49 games last season with the Sabres, Butler had two goals and seven assists for nine points, while Byron had one goal and one assist in eight games. He also appeared in 67 games with Portland of the AHL, scoring 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points. Not a bad move for the Sabres, as they get a quality shutdown defenseman in Regehr. He also has good size, plays with some grit, and has some leadership skills, so he should be a good fit for the Sabres. Buffalo will likely hope that re-acquiring Kotalik will help him improve his offensive game by playing in familiar surroundings. As for the Flames, they get a puck-moving defenseman in Butler who will bring some depth to their blueline. Byron brings some two-way skill and offensive upside to the team, but will likely play a fourth line role next season. The Flames also trimmed some salary from their payroll by shipping out Regehr and Kotalik, which they promptly used to sign left wing Alex Tanguay to a five-year contract extension worth $17.5 million.

Ryan Smyth Heading to Calgary Pending Ownership Approval

According to TSN's Gord Miller, a trade has been worked out that would see the Los Angeles Kings send left wing Ryan Smyth to the Calgary Flames for a late round pick. No deal has been confirmed and there's no guarantee the trade will go through, as the Flames ownership has delayed the transaction in order to make a final decision. Earlier this week, Smyth requested that the Kings trade him back to the Edmonton Oilers, where he spent the majority of his career. He has one more year on his current contract which has a salary cap hit of $6.25 million. I'll have more on this if the trade goes through.

Ryan Smyth will not be going to the Calgary Flames. There is now a tentative deal in place for the Los Angeles Kings to trade Smyth to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Gilbert Brule and a draft pick.

Smyth's return to Edmonton is being held up because of the health of Gilbert Brule. Sources say the Kings were willing to take on Brule with the intention of buying out the final year of his contract, but the collective bargaining agreement forbids teams from buying out injured players. For now, it's looks like Smyth is staying in Los Angeles unless the two teams can alter the terms of the trade.

Flames' Robyn Regehr Asked to Waive No-Trade Clause

According to tsn.ca, the Calgary Flames have asked defenseman Robyn Regehr to waive his no-movement clause and accept a trade to the Buffalo Sabres. In 79 games last season, he had two goals and 15 assists for 17 points and 58 penalty minutes. In 826 career NHL games, all with the Flames, he has 29 goals and 134 assists for 163 points and 802 penalty minutes. Definitely an interesting bit of news that has surfaced this afternoon. If Regehr waives his no-movement clause to facilitate a trade to Buffalo, he will bring lots of leadership, grit, and shutdown skills to the team. It will be interesting to see who could be heading to the Flames if the trade occurs. It could also be a salary dumping trade for the Flames to perhaps make another trade, add some players through free agency, or create more salary cap space to re-sign some of their own free agents. I'll have more on this once it is known what Regehr's decision will be.

Regehr has waived his no-movement clause to facilitate a trade to the Sabres. The specifics of the trade are not yet known, but it is believed the Flames will send Ales Kotalik to Buffalo as well. The rumored return for Calgary is Chris Butler, Paul Byron, and a second round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft, but nothing has been confirmed thus far. I'll have more on this once the move is finalized.
