The Boston Bruins have announced that they have re-signed right wing Shawn Thornton to a two-year contract extension worth $2.2 million. The deal will average out to $1.1 million per season. He would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer. In 71 games so far this season, he has four goals and eight assists for 12 points and 145 penalty minutes. Not a bad depth signing for the Bruins, as Thornton plays an extremely physical game on the ice. He loves to hit and intimidate the opposition and isn't afraid to drop the gloves to defend his teammates. He will continue to be an excellent fit on Boston's checking lines over the next two years.

He would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1. In 74 games last season with the Bruins, he scored one goal and nine assists for 10 points and 141 penalty minutes. In 290 career NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, and Boston Bruins, he has 15 goals and 25 assists for 40 points and 496 penalty minutes. This is a decent signing for the Bruins, as Thornton is a very physical player on the ice. He plays with lots of grit and toughness and is a great agitator on the ice. He will be a fierce competitor for the team on the third and fourth lines next season.
