Red Wings Resign McCarty to One-Year Contract
The Detroit Red Wings announced today that they have resigned right wing Darren McCarty to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. McCarty rejoined the Red Wings in February after playing two seasons with the Calgary Flames. In three games last season with Detroit, McCarty had one assist. He played in 17 playoffs games, scoring one goal and adding one assist. In 14 NHL seasons, McCarty has 126 goals and 161 assists for 287 points and 1452 penalty minutes in 745 games with the Detroit Red Wings and Calgary Flames. McCarty became a fan favorite in Detroit due in large part to his physical play. McCarty gained celebrity status in Detroit after his beating of Colorado Avalanche forward Claude Lemieux in 1997 and scoring the game winning goal in Game 4 of the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals, sealing the Red Wings' first Stanley Cup since 1955. The McCarty signing is a good one for the Red Wings. He provides much needed grit and toughness to the team.
