Red Wings Sign Jimmy Howard to Two-Year Contract

The Detroit Red Wings announced today that they have signed goaltender Jimmy Howard to a two-year contract extension worth $4.5 million. The deal averages out to $2.25 million per season. He would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer. In 47 games this season with Detroit, he has a 30-12-3 record, two shutouts, a 2.79 GAA, and a .908 save percentage. This is a good move for the Red Wings, as Howard has become a reliable goaltender for the team over the past two seasons. He brings solid depth in goal and is quick to make saves. However, he does have consistency issues and can let in bad goals from time to time, but is still a very solid goaltender. Plus, his $2.25 million per season is very affordable for his caliber and a very salary cap friendly contract for Detroit.
