Maple Leafs Sign Defenseman Mike Komisarek to Five-Year Deal
The Toronto Maple Leafs continued to be busy on Wednesday and made a big splash on the free agent market by signing long-time Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Komisarek to a five-year contract worth $22.5 million. The deal averages out to $4.5 million per season. The Canadiens had been negotiating a new contract with Komisarek by talks broke down just prior to July 1. In 66 games last season with the Canadiens, Komisarek scored two goals and nine assists for 11 points and 121 penalty minutes. In 361 career games over six seasons with the Canadiens, he has 12 goals and 46 assists for 58 points and 496 penalty minutes. This is a tremendous signing for the Maple Leafs, as Komisarek is quickly developing into a top-two defenseman. He brings lots of defensive depth to the team as well as grittiness and physical play. Toronto GM Brian Burke is a big fan of physical players, so Komisarek will fit in nicely with the team.
