Islanders Sign Veteran Goalie Roloson to Two-Year Contract

The New York Islanders added the experienced back-up goaltender they were looking for on Wednesday by signing Dwayne Roloson to a two-year contract worth $5 million. The deal averages out to $2.5 million per season. The Edmonton Oilers had been trying to re-sign Roloson for the past few weeks, but contract talks stalled a few days ago, all but indicating he would not be returning to the team. In 63 games last season with the Oilers, he posted a 28-24-9 record with a 2.77 GAA and a .915 save percentage. The 39-year-old netminder has also played for the Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Minnesota Wild, and Edmonton Oilers. He was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2000 Expansion Draft, but never played a game for them. This isn’t a bad move for the Islanders, as Roloson is a more than capable goaltender, especially late in the season when he seems to play his best hockey, but age is starting to catch up with him. However, he should be able to easily jump into the starter’s role if Rick DiPietro should struggle or be sidelined with an injury.
