Thrashers Part Ways with Forward Clarke MacArthur

The Atlanta Thrashers and Clarke MacArthur have parted ways. The team announced today that they have walked away from a one-year, $2.4 million arbitrator awarded contract for the 25-year-old forward. He is now an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team. The Thrashers acquired MacArthur on March 3 from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for third and fourth round draft picks in 2010. In 81 games last season with the Sabres and Thrashers, he had 16 goals and 19 assists for 35 points. Can't say I blame Atlanta from walking away on this deal, as MacArthur isn't a very consistent forward and I think the arbitrator awarded him a little too much for his current skill level. However, he is a versatile forward, as he can play both center and on the wing, and he does have some offensive skill and speed. I imagine another team will probably sign him at some point during the off-season, and if he can have a good season in 2010-11 and show a little more consistency, then he may be in line for a $2 million contract next summer.
